Duncan Riley at the Inquisitr had a nice post (discovered via louisgray’s shared items) about the reality of building a blog. It is hard work, there is no free lunch. I particularly like this quote about building your reputation with search engines – both a factor of relationships and time.

…attracting traffic on a blog requires hard work, great content, and social interaction outside the blog. There’s also the time factor: most blogs take a good 6-9 months to truly establish themselves, not just in building traffic, but in building incoming links and good treatment in search engines. Take The Inquisitr for example: we did more traffic in the first 13 days of this month than we did for the full total of our first 3 months.

Using Adwords to research keywords

Perhaps the most important method for increasing your site traffic is to be aware of important keywords, and actually use them! This great post over at “Blogger Free Blog NZ” describes it about as well as I can…

Another tool which I found to be extremely useful was the keyword research tool. This tool automatically generates keywords suggested by the Google database. It also checks the Keyword Popularity of both new and existing keywords. Besides that, it helps to explore keywords with low competition to add to one’s existing targeted keyword list. This tool is important if one to avoid using the same keywords as those used by existing sites which would then divert traffic away from ours.

It seems like there are plenty of great tools for automating days 1-30. See for instance Market Samurai for picking a niche, and WordPressDirect for quickly deploying and testing a niche. but for me, it is the consistent daily writing that gets difficult. It is my hope that PageRush will automate the process of getting more site traffic by making the tasks in day 30-90 easier. I started this blog to capture tips for promoting your Web site. I have been designing a Web based tool – code named “PageRush” – that would use focused “Repost Blogging” (as named in the presentation below) to help sites get web traffic by growing their SEO rank for specific keyword phrases. Repost blogging is defined as “Taking a post or article from another location and reposting a significant part of it as a blog post with limited original commentary”. With PageRush, I would implement a minimum comment length (saying that makes me feel like a presedential candidate). Also, I would make sure the reposted content maintains an attribution link. Lastly, I would argue that much of the content worth reposting may be short form content (tweets, etc.) anyway – so the length of the comment often will not matter.

Most bloggers use a combination of these styles. What style of blogger are you?
